About Lauren / Fizgiggery

Hello, I’m Lauren!  You may already know me as the sculptural jeweller / artist flaurena™ or as the human behind Shyhound — but allow me to introduce myself properly.

I’m a practical-but-artistic type who seeks out the fabulous, the inventive, the charming, the delicious, the ingenious, the artful, and the beautiful.  When I chance upon it, well, that makes me jolly happy!

I’m British-American with Spanish ties (the full explanation goes a little something like this), and I’m married to the love of my life, Mr. Fizgig, who has made me laugh every day for more than 11 years.  We’re the human guardians of a dog “little horse”, Banjo, a goofy, but sensitive, Greyhound-mix who has his own blog.  In March 2011, after 5 years of living in Brooklyn, the three of us drove from New York to California, as chronicled in The Great American Road Trip.

As I’m relatively new to the San Diego area, I’m on the lookout for creative / fun / interesting / alternative / delicious things here.  If you have any tips, please let me know!

More About Fizgiggery

Fiz-what?!

Fizgiggery (pronounced fizz-GIG-ery) is a word I made up to mean ‘creative mischief’.  It stems from the word ‘fizgig’, which can mean both a ‘fizzy little firework’, and ‘a gadding, flirtatious woman’.  And there’s also “Fizzgig” the boisterous little monster in The Dark Crystal.  I’m pretty much part fiery sparks, part tongue-in-cheek charm, and part loveable monster — so as ‘cooking’ is to ‘cookery’, ‘fizgig’ is to ‘Fizgiggery’!

Why do you blog?

Well, it combines many things I enjoy doing. Like sharing stories, writing, coding, snapping photographs, and connecting with friends — old and new — all over the world.  I enjoy writing about things that I think are beautiful, inspirational, or delicious!

Blog à Clef

Mine is a blog à clef…  Although Lauren is my real name, my ‘real life’ friends and family members have each been dubbed with a special agent codename that they will understand and find amusing.  This is so I can write freely whilst respecting their privacy.  (This is also why I’m usually the only distinguishable person in this blog’s photos.)

…Wot Larx?

Simply, it’s a battle cry for fun.  (I pinched it from Charles Dickens years ago in high school and have never grown tired of saying it.)
