Online Self-Portrait

There is a fine line between privacy and openness online.

I struggle with wanting to simplify my various handles (Fizgiggery, flaurena, Shyhound, Lauren X) into one, versus keeping them all as separate identities.

To me, being all these things is being Me. But is it confusing to people who don’t know me offline?

Regardless of whether we know each other offline, or have exchanged emails, or just visited each other’s blog, or nothing at all (!), I’m curious: do you have multiple online identities or just one handle? Do you use your real name online? If so, why? If not, why not?

I don’t do much to cover my identity on line…maybe I’m being naive, it just never occurred to me. I only use my first name, but I don’t cover up where I live, or my hobbies, so I think it would be easy enough to figure out who I am. Then again, I think it is just my friends and family who read my blog anyway!

I see nothing wrong with having many different facets coming out online. I use the “Kadja” thing to remind myself that even if I changed my name, the history behind my person is the same. When I write, sometimes different voices come through me, but I am still me–just versatile and multi- faceted! I make a good gopher, work horse or whatever, but since I was raised by my father, I didn’t do a lot of “girly-girl” stuff. My escape as a child came through movies (old ones), books and music–or going to one of my various outdoor hiding places. I never got to have slumber parties or any of that. I used to dream of going to different places and being able to dress up and see the ballet and such. I loved watching musicals on TV too. However, my friends say I’m enjoying the “girlhood” I never had–and they talk about my jewelry too. ***BTW–still having Flaurena withdrawals!***Ha! I can be “me” online or off because people can take me as I am or whatever. I don’t have to “please” everyone anymore. However, as far as your identity or identities–I say do as you want. Each facet has a purpose and I know one of them definitely changed me! You go girl! Have a great week! :-D
