So, one time I played a transsexual “Pirate Demon” serial killer, and it was an epiphany:  I am an actress, and, however I pay my bills, I need to act.

It started with a chance meeting with a friend/ real estate agent who rented our Brooklyn apartment to us.  Like so many of us creatives, by day Chris* worked as a broker, but was a talented artist with a penchant for horror movies.

It was Chris’s dream to direct a script that he’d written.  One day, he learned that he’d secured funding for the first 10 minutes of his feature-length film Night Brings the Fury, and his good news coincided with our encounter.

He asked me if I would like to audition for one of the lead roles – that of the Fury, a male-to-female transsexual who was the victim of a hate crime eight years earlier and seeks to avenge herself in the present day.  I literally leapt at the opportunity, and channelled Felicia from The Witches of Eastwick in my audition.  It worked!

A few weeks’ later, I made my way to Long Island City in Queens to meet with a Special FX artist to build the prosthetics for my face that would turn me into The Fury:

The closest I'll ever get to playing "Tommy" in the rock opera of the same name by The Who...

As my character anoints herself with mud from the local swamp before each of her slayings, prosthetics were required for the purposes of continuity. But this mud is no ordinary mud – it’s supernatural! So we had to do a few make-up tests to see which kind of mud would be best: as it turns out, the hypoallergenic special FX stuff worked better in my hair, and terracotta clay worked best on top of my skin and the prosthetics:

A couple of months later, the entire cast and crew travelled down to Allaire State Park and Asbury Park, both in New Jersey, to film over a long weekend.  It was an intense shoot, not just because of the subject matter, but because of the long days/ nights.  But we all had a great time working on this camp horror flick!

Oh, just in case you’re wondering, three hours in the make-up chair = 45 minutes in the shower afterwards…

If you can stomach extreme violence and camp gore, you can watch it for yourself here. But be warned, this is probably R-rated (18 in Europe).

I’ll say it again: VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED - strong violence, graphic sex, extreme gore.

*As Chris’s name appears in the credits of the above movie, I am breaking my usual rule and calling him by his real name.

Loving it Lauren. It’s fabulous. The voice is great. I can’t understand why you’re not an award winning actress by now – life isn’t fair. x

I’m so impressed, Lauren! You’ve got skills to pay the bills. Will this short be made into a feature length film? I hope you don’t mind if I post the vid on facebook(some of my friends are huge horror fans, too). Oh, and have I met Chris before? I feel like I have. :-)

Thanks, ladies! Hopefully it will be made into a feature-length, because I’d love to reprise my role…

@Jennie, by all means, please share with whomever you think would enjoy it! I wonder if you met Chris at our housewarming party? You were both there, all those many moons ago…

For whatever reason, I never saw this until tonight. I’d like to see you reprise it too. I agree with the others–and at least your character is not a clone of Freddie Kruger…I am so sorry but when I saw the “blood geyser” part I laughed at that…I had to get blood drawn once…The needle WAS IN the vein. No blood came out until the poor rookie went to take the tube off of the top and then the blood squirted 8 feet and hit the door! He thought I was going to get mad, but I had been stuck so many times, I laughed at that! I chalked it up to one of life’s absurdities–and my dumb a** luck! Ended up getting stuck twice more before they got it! I know I told the poor kid to “go drilling” but sheesh!

Ha! That reminds me of when I had to give a blood sample for my Green Card medical many years ago. The doctor saw that the nurses were backed up, so kindly offered to draw my blood herself so I wouldn’t have to wait. The next morning, I was on a 6am flight to Bulgaria – at 35,000 feet, I decided to investigate why my arm still hurt and why I couldn’t fully extend it… That early morning, high altitude light didn’t hide a thing: I saw a bruise running from above my elbow and half-way down my forearm! It was 3 weeks before my arm was back to normal.

Moral of the story: never let a doctor draw your blood. It’s not their specialty – literally!

Hi Libby,

I do use Facebook, but only to keep in touch with my family. I’d be pleased to connect with you on Twitter, though – you can find me under @fizgiggery.

Thanks!

Lauren, thanks for the kind words and all I can say is that it was a dream come true to make the film and work with you! What a blast! Well, so far no word on funding a feature, but I would get you in the role again. I’m running my antique shop up in the PA mountains and writing a screenplay based on a Germanic X-mas holiday creature known as the Krampus. Please give a call when you can. Hope the West is doing you wicked good!!! XOXOXO Chris P.
